In a press release Milnes said, “In little more than a decade, Opera Naples has distinguished itself from many others by building a home of its own and creating an academy for emerging international stars. It has the promise of a regional, perhaps even national, identity. But it needs our support and encouragement to scale those heights. I hope the Southwest Florida community will join me in showing support of this outstanding young opera company we’re so fortunate to have in our midst, by attending the annual gala.”

Milnes is one the legendary singers of his generation who appeared in over 650 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, where he was honored with 16 new productions, seven opening nights, and 10 national telecasts. He is a Grammy winner and has performed with some of the leading artists of his generation including Renata Scotto, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Joan Sutherland. He and his wife run a program entitled Savannah VOICE Festival.

“An Egyptian Fantasy” gala is a principal source of support for Opera Naples and its signature fundraiser for the season. Funds raised at the gala allow for the sustencance of a permanent opera company that enriches the Southwest Florida community by presenting performances with international artists and rising stars.

The program, now entering its second year, consists of one-on-one vocal coaching in addition to lectures and classes, all building up to a public performance on April 16. Among the faculty are soprano Veronica Villarroel, voice instructor Manny Perez, and tenor Bruce Ford. Special guest artists include conductor Ramon Tebar and legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes.

Milnes will present a special Master Class and Fireside Chat on April 15, from 6:30-9:30pm at Opera Naples, 2408 Linwood Ave in Naples, Florida.

The week begins with a Master Class by the Maestro himself in the MacKay Studio of the National Opera Center on Sunday, March 18th at 7:30pm. VOICExperience’s Opera as Drama artists begin their week of study with this evening of performance and learning.

The artists return for another Master Class on Monday, March 19th at 7:30pm led by stage director Fabrizio Melano and pyschotherapist Laura Melano Flanagan for a unique look at some of opera’s most beloved characters. The Opera as Drama artists will be challenged to analyze the psychology of their characters in the scenes they perform, as they are coached by this brother-sister duo.

Milnes will host the annual VOICE Gala at the Harmonie Club on Tuesday, March 20th at 6pm, honoring mezzo soprano Denyce Graves for her contributions to the legacy of opera. Tickets start at $500, and help fund the Milnes VOICE Program Scholarships.

The program moves to the Explorer’s Club on Thursday, March 22nd at 7:30pm for some Broadway! The VOICExperience Artists perform a casual cabaret, showing off their versatility in this fun concert.

Finally, Opera as Drama returns to the Opera Center to wrap up with a final showcase on Sunday, March 25th at 7:30pm in Marc A. Scorca Hall. After a week of performance and study, the artists present their scenes alongside the original texts set by the composers.

Susan Danis, General Director/CEO of Florida Grand Opera, hosts this conversation with Sherrill Milnes as he shares backstage stories of his international career. Highlights of the two-day visit include:

• A free public lecture titled “Sherrill Milnes – My Life on Stage” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 in Sheslow Auditorium. A reception will follow in Levitt Hall.
• A voice masterclass with Milnes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in Sheslow Auditorium.

The visit will also include a lecture and Q&A session on “The Business of Singing” at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28; an opportunity for selected Drake students to sing a mock opera audition and receive feedback from Milnes and Zouves on Friday at 11 a.m.; and a voice masterclass with Zouves at 2 p.m. on Friday; all events are open to the public and located in Sheslow Auditorium.

“Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves have so much knowledge, experience, talent to share with our students,” said Ann Cravero, associate professor of voice and director of the Drake Opera Theatre. “It’s an honor to be able to share this with the community as well.”

Cravero served as assistant director to Milnes and Zouves at the Prague Summer Nights Music Festival and on the faculty at their Savannah Voice Festival in 2016; it’s through this relationship that Milnes and Zouves were welcomed back to Drake.

Milnes has sung over 650 performances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and is the recipient of three Grammy awards. He has performed in opera houses all over the world, including London, Milan, Berlin, Paris, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Salzburg, Hamburg and Moscow. He has also appeared with opera companies throughout the United States. He was the 2008 recipient of the “Opera News” Award for Distinguished Achievement.

Zouves is a Greek-American educator, director, producer and writer. She has performed at Carnegie Hall and throughout the United States, as well as directed, taught and produced events throughout the world in places such as Canada, Italy and Finland. Zouves served as vice president and associate general director of Opera Tampa from 2007 to 2011.

Together, Milnes and Zouves co-founded and run the Sherrill Milnes VOICE Programs, the VOICExperience Program and the Savannah VOICE Festival, to provide opportunities for young artists. Milnes and Zouves also give numerous masterclasses and mentor young artists, and Milnes judges competitions.

A native of Downers Grove, Ill., Milnes received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Drake in 1957 and his Master of Music Education degree, also from Drake, in the following year.

Founded by Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves as part of the Sherrill Milnes VOICE programs, the Savannah VOICE Festival celebrates its fifth season this August with three weeks of opera, musical theater and song! The Festival brings artists from around the world to the Hostess City with the mission of providing quality vocal music to Savannah and continuing the legacy of great singing.

This season, themed funny@five, features the comedic operas of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville as its centerpieces. Audiences can attend a “prelude” performance of Shave and a Haircut, a show by Festival Director Maria Zouves that introduces the Festival operas’ main characters.

Milnes and the Festival will also host friend and colleague Denyce Graves for a short residency, as she teaches VOICExperience singers both privately in the Studio, and in a public Master Class. The Milnes VOICE Studio takes place during the first two weeks of the Festival, and culminates in the student production of Le Nozze di Figaro and final showcase of Opera Scenes and Songs.  Milnes offers Master Classes to the Milnes VOICE Studio throughout the Festival, which are free to attend and open to the public.

Other highlights include an evening of gypsy swing and some Barbra Streisand performed by VOICExperience alumna Jessica Ann Best with local Savannah band Velvet Caravan, a dinner event at Cha Bella restaurant with a performance by tenor Santiago Ballerini and friends, and Broadway VOICES, a concert of show tunes that promises to “make ’em laugh!”
